Our Story: Preserving the History of Decatur County

Decatur County was established in 1823 along the Flint River, which played a central role in shaping early life in the area. Bainbridge developed as a river town, with steamboats carrying cotton and goods through southwest Georgia. Agriculture, timber, and later the turpentine industry helped define the local economy, while the arrival of the railroad brought new growth and connection to surrounding regions.

As the county evolved through the 20th century, national events left their mark locally. During World War II, the Bainbridge Army Airfield trained thousands of aviation cadets, bringing new activity and significance to the community. Through these changes, Decatur County maintained a strong sense of identity rooted in hard work, industry, and community life.

The Decatur County Historical Society was established to preserve that story in 1969. The Society took the lead role in showcasing Decatur County history in the 1973 Sesquicentennial and the 2023 Bicentennial. Through the collection of artifacts, photographs, and records, the Society works to document the everyday lives and defining moments that have shaped the county. The Museum now serves as a place where visitors can connect with this history, from early agriculture and industry to education, healthcare, and local traditions.

Today, the Historical Society continues its mission to preserve and share the heritage of Decatur County. By protecting the past and making it accessible to the public, the Museum ensures that the stories of this community will be remembered for generations to come.
