At the Decatur County Historical Society’s recent quarterly dinner, members were given a powerful and personal glimpse into the past through the work of local researcher James “Bubba” Spooner. Spooner shared the story of his great-uncle, Hilliard Wesley Spooner, a Decatur County native who lost his life while serving in Europe during World War II. Through careful research and family dedication, Spooner has helped ensure that his great-uncle’s story—and sacrifice—will not be forgotten.

Honoring Service, Sacrifice, and Bainbridge’s Wartime History
Hilliard Wesley Spooner served as a corporal in the 164th Combat Engineer Battalion during World War II. Like many young men from southwest Georgia, he left Bainbridge and Decatur County to serve in a global conflict that reshaped the world. His life, though tragically cut short in 1945, reflects the broader story of the “Greatest Generation”—ordinary individuals who answered the call to serve during one of the most significant periods in modern history.
Bainbridge’s Role in the War Effort
The presentation also served as a reminder of how deeply World War II touched the Bainbridge community itself. During the war, Bainbridge became home to the Bainbridge Army Airfield, constructed in 1942 as part of a nationwide effort to train military pilots. At its peak, the facility trained thousands of cadets and played a vital role in preparing airmen for combat overseas. The presence of the airfield brought new people, infrastructure, and economic activity to the area, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
A Lesser-Known Chapter of Local History
In addition to its role as a training center, Bainbridge also contributed to the war effort in other ways. Toward the end of the war, the airfield site was repurposed to house German prisoners of war, a lesser-known chapter of local history that reflects how even small American towns became directly connected to global events. At the same time, many men and women from Decatur County served overseas, and their stories continue to be preserved through oral histories and family research efforts.

Preserving Local Memory
Stories like that of Hilliard Wesley Spooner are deeply personal, but they are also part of a larger collective memory. Each name represents a family, a community, and a moment in time when Bainbridge stood alongside the rest of the nation in service and sacrifice. By researching and sharing these histories, individuals like James “Bubba” Spooner help connect the present to the past in meaningful and lasting ways.
